I have an HP Pavilion lappy.

    1GB ram
    100GB HD
    XP Home
    3 usb ports
    Intel Pentium

Had it now for about 4 years and never had trouble. However I bought it new. :)

Not really a problem as and external one can be had for about £25.

I would look to upgrade the ram to 1GB or more either 2*512 (ebay the old) or swap 1 256 for a 1GB giving 1.25 and XP will fly along.

The other question is where is it from? in particular is it stolen?

What are you talking? If the drive is faulty you drive the price downwards.

Anyway, who wants to have an external drive for a laptop? £25? Really?

Don't be blinded by a bargain, especially if it's faulty. If all works well, the price may be right.
If the drive is not reliable and battery is close to death, think about your usage pattern.
