Acer Laptop ~ Faulty

I purchased an Acer Extensa 620Z in August last year from a small local retailer where i used to live.
Last month the unit started to overheat, the touchpad was selecting everything on the page, the left mouse button wouldnt click, and the unit charged eratically.
I phoned up Acer support and was told the machine wasnt in warranty, they said if i sent them a copy of the receipt to prove when i purchased it there would be no problem.
I did this and they collected the unit on the 19th April.
After a lot of phone calls to Acer nobody seemed to know what was happening i then received an invoice from them for the cost of the repair stating it was out of warranty, I phoned them again and asked them what was going on and they said they would get it corrected and repaired.
I eventually received the unit back on Friday 22nd May, after they had, had it for just over a month despite being quoted a 7 to 10 day turnaround once the unit had been collected.
On turning the laptop on i couldnt use the left mouse button or the touch pad to click onto anything, i plugged in a usb mouse which it didnt detect also. The unit wasnt useable.
I phoned Acer again who advised me to restore it back to factory settings and they emailed me a guide on how to do so, whilst on the phone i asked if it would be possible to do so due to the fact i couldnt use the mouse aside from moving the cursor around the screen, and the reply was you shouldnt have a problem with that.
Anyway attempted to do the restore and couldnt click on anything . phoned Acer back again who are taking the machine back in to be looked at again, it is being collected tomorrow.
Does anyone know where i stand with this? I have already lost a months use out of the laptop and it is going back again who knows how long they will have it for this time!!
What happens if it comes back again and the problem is still there??
Surely my guarantee should be extended to cover the time that they have had the unit for???
Help someone please!!

A loss of a month's use through repair is borderline reasonable - however, a further month would not be in my view under the Sales of Goods Act.
I doubt you would get any warranty extension - they are not obliged to but remember that whilst the warranty may only be 12mths, it would be reasonable under the SOGA to expect a laptop to last longer.
Your contract is with the retailer not ACER, it would be up to them to offer a refund or replacement.0
