HDD Data Missing/ Recovery

Options
Hi

I have a kaputt laptop that i want to try and get some files from. I have taken the drive out of the laptop and connected it to another PC using one of these i borrowed from a pal

However when i open the drive in explorer there is nothing of a personal nature there. All the operating system files appear to be there and program files and there is a Documents and Settings\Scott\ My Documents folder but there is only 4.1Mb of data in there and i cannot access it as when i click on it i get a microsoft pop up saying "Access is Denied".

I have done a search on the drive for any .JPG file and all it returns is the system .jpgs like clip art, etc nothing of mine.

Am i missing something here. I find it weird that all the system stuff is there but nothing of mine.

Thanks in advance for any help or advide.
