Hi I am new to the boards and would appreciate some advice. I am trying to copy some music on my computer on to a blank CD. I have WindowsXP and I am using Windows Media player. Every time a message comes up saying ' Connect a burner and restart'. I am sure I have used this in the past but must have done something to stop it by mistake. How do I reactivate it, not to technical please, as you can see I am not an expert.
Thankyou in anticipation.

According to the Media Player on line help page http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/burn.mspx-
It could be that the drive is either not supported or not installed correctly.
To verify that your CD drive is recognized and set up to burn, do the following:
1. Open My Computer.(Click "Start", "My Computer")
2. In the Devices with Removable Storage area, right-click the drive, and then click Properties. If your CD drive is recognized, you will see a Recording tab.
3. Select the Enable CD recording on this drive check box.
Best of luck"It's nice to be important but more important to be nice"

I have tried clicking on Properties but it doesn't show as CD drive recognised and I can't see a recording tab. Any more suggestion please?0

Judging by feedback on other forums, it seems that MS Media Player 11 can cause this problem and there is little help from Microsoft in resolving it.
The only successful remedy appears to be a reinstall of Media player so try this -
1) Start - Control Panel - Add/Remove progs. Scroll down to WMP and click Remove. This should roll you back to a previous version.
2) Restart your computer
3) Download and install Media Player 11 from here
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx
4) Cross your fingers and see if it now works
Here's hoping "It's nice to be important but more important to be nice"

Thankyou for your help. If I remove WMP, would this mean that I would loose all the music that I have on my computer at the moment. Thanks.0

No - your music files should be held on your hard disk, usually within My Documents Folder - unless you have put them somewhere different - they are not stored within WMP.
I believe that Media Player creates a Library by examining this folder (and possibly others) for media files but this is just a list of shortcuts or pointers to the actual files.
If you haven't already, it would be a good idea to back up your My Documents folder onto a big enough pen drive etc at the very least - just in case something screws up besides WMP."It's nice to be important but more important to be nice"

Why do you have to go through that stress. Just download ashampoo burning software 2009 free online and burn as much as you like. You can't keep a good man down...0

Your computer vendor would have supplied you with a dvd/cd containing Nero just install that and do the burning, otherwise download it from nero.com. Using inbuilt windows xp cd burner is a pain....0
