I have been given a PC and am unsure what if anything I need to check to make sure there is no virus lurking. I have Windows XP, the PC is quite old but hopefully will do until I get back on my feet and can purchase a newer one, I have Mcafee installed as part of my broadband package. Do I need to do anything else?

might be a good start0 -
Yes, firstly to uninstall Mcrapafee and get some decent protection....
AV - avast or avira, avira lighter on resources and slightly better detection rates, but avast has an e-mail scanner built-in.
Anti-Malware/Spyware - MalwareBytes Antimalware and SuperAntiSpyware
General cleaning etc. - CCleaner, GlaryUtilities and Defraggler
Firewall - personally I use windows firewal behind my router, others will recommend prob PCTools firewall (you know who you are
)
All free and should keep you free of nasties

Thanks both, Curlyben's instructions seem simple enough even for me to follow.0

Yes, but as was pointed out on that thread (NOT in the best possible way, though, it has to be said) the progs I listed above will be far more effective against today's threats. Good luck
