    I didn't mention firewall as this isn't really in the whole maintenance frame, but excellent security none the less.

    In the interest of reducing the amount of resources used I would say use the inbuilt XP/Vista firewall rather than 3rd party software. However I would ONLY recommend this if your router has a built in firewall that is turned on. Most do but not all. I've done this for years and never had a problem.
