Well, obviously he isn't going to lift pensioners out of poverty. Giving nationwide free bus travel from April 2008 isn't going to do anything at all to redress the injustice suffered by (mostly women) pensioners. You can't really go very far within off-peak times, can you, and if you go any distance, outside your own county you're going to want to e.g. have lunch somewhere, which costs money.

My DH said 'we may not feel like driving in a few years' time, in theory we could go up to Glasgow by bus'. I said: 'but going on a journey of that length can't be done just in off-peak hours'.

I am so lucky, I'm not poor. I've read the Age Concern report 'Just above the breadline' and it's something I find very hard to imagine. Although I've lived in poverty other periods in my life, but I can't imagine it now...

We are looking at having our 75-year old asbestos-tiled roof replaced this year. I'm lucky, there's a tax-free lump sum I can take, DH and I are so, so lucky.

  • I don't think this was what our dear Chancellor was referring to. I think he meant the governments response to the Adair Turner report, due in a couple of months. I'm not holding my breath though.

I'm really fond of that additional 25p you get on the state pension for being over 80. I'm always telling my Mother to go out and splurge with it.

    This is what he said

"I can confirm as usual the tax-free winter allowance of £200 for pensioners and £300 for the over 80s. Further support for pensioners will be contained within the forthcoming pensions white paper"

    And that's all he said.

Many people will be celebrating yesterday's return to a Tory government.

well I get 10p a week pension credit, and it is sent to my bank account every 13 weeks. Mind you I am not complaining, as it eleviates me from paying council tax which a lot more. It's just the
"Go ahead it's yours pick it up" adverts that make me chuckle
I just love splashing out with my £1.30 every three months:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

We'll be paying £99 a month in 2006/7 on this band 'C' 2-bedroomed bungalow, that's nearly £1200 over the year. So if it saves you that, it's got to be good news, and worth having.

Gordon yuppie Brown, the cud chewin, Fat Cats Friend, will not look after pensioners until he becomes one.

Just like he didn't look after kids, till he became a father. :lipsrseal :rolleyes2 :rolleyes2 :rolleyes2

I'm not sure about the "paper he talked about today" but this link is for a document that's 2 years old. And that White Paper was not about helping pensioners, but about encouraging younger people to save for a pension.

Many of the measures in the White Paper were translated into the Pensions Act 2004, which is now on the statute book.

What document were you looking for, Dora?
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
