car tax: can I get a refund then buy again

hiya,

I have a 1.3 litre car. My car tax is paid until october 2006.
In light of the new budget, I was thinking of:

1) getting a car tax refund
2) buying a year's car tax at the new, cheaper rate.

many thanks for any advice,

yogi

    righto,

So it's just a matter of taking MOT and tax disc into post office at the end of the month and doing it all at once ( I seem to remember that you can only claim tax back for whole months remaining on the tax disc)

    Is this correct?

    cheers,

to get a refund you need to complete a V14 (this can be downloaded from their web site - https://www.dvla.gov.uk) and send it to the DVLA in Swansea but you are right in thinking you can only claim for whole months.

Now depending on whether you need your car for the next week you could (I guess!) theoretically declare it off the road, and send it back this week so that April classed as a whole month and then buy a new disc on 1st April.

A couple of things to watch here. If you have a 6 month tax disc, 10% of the price you originally paid is specifically because you didnt buy a year. This 10% will not be refunded if return the disc for a refund.

You can claim whole months only, and they will judge this by the post mark on the envelope, not the date you write on the form!

So could you buy a new tax disc on 1 April then send your old one to Swansea for a refund?

Yes, but send your old one on March 31st, (last day of month), ideally take it to the post office and get a "proof of posting" card date stamped by PO, these are free and prove you posted it on the last day of the month, post it on April 1st and you will be a fool, because you will lose all of Aprils refund.

I would only save £5, not worth the risk fo losing a month's refund.
