Cheaper CDs and DVDs at Tesco, Jersey

Options
Seen this advertised in a few daily newspapers today and the deal looks quite good.

http://jersey.tesco.com/

As I'm not a regular buyer of DVD's and stuff I'm not sure how brilliant the deal is but Tesco's are confident that they can't be beaten on price.

Why is it cheaper to buy your products from Tesco Jersey?

Tesco Jersey prices are lower than the Tesco Extra Entertainment prices because:

Tesco Extra Entertainment prices include VAT
Tesco Jersey prices do not include VAT, as the Isle of Jersey does not charge VAT on items bought in Jersey.
There are certain tax and customs regulations that exempt consignments of goods of low value (under 18 GBP) from import VAT. Goods sold by Tesco Jersey are "Community Goods" (i.e. in free circulation in the customs territory of the EU) and should not therefore be subject to customs duties when they are imported from Jersey to the UK.

If, however, an item of a value greater than 18 GBP were imported, the addressee would be liable to pay this import VAT (the addressee is considered the importer in this instance).

Please note: We do not have any control over any additional charges that may be incurred by customs clearance. You are responsible for these charges, and for complying with all laws and regulations of the UK Customs Authorities.

Please visit the HM Customs and Excise guide to shopping on the internet for full information.

Please read the Tesco Jersey Product Terms and Conditions.

Amazon aslo have Amazon Jersey on selected DVD's

See the link below. it is for Stand by Me on DVD and below the add to basket is an option to buy from Amazon Jersey

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000050GQA/qid=1103318728/ref=pd_ka_0/202-2318133-4993416
  • Has anyone been charged either the customs clearance or the vat on any purchases from Tesco or Amazon or play.com when ordering from Jersey.

Our post man tells us they can charge a fee to inspect the parcel to see if it should attract vat so even if it does not attract vat one may be liable to pay the fee to see anyway negating any savings.

    Cheers

Bought quite a few games/dvds from Play and a few others that havent attracted VAT. Cant see how Tesco can be any different. Also 7dayshop are based there and any order above £18 unless its a high value item will be shipped in several consignments so as to get around the restrictions.

No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you

I actually prefer to check the prices of a range of shops rather than shop at one (eg cdwow)....if it's cheaper at blahdvd, play, etc. then why not order from them? :)

EDIT: also remember to check your cashback % for each (although normally 2.5)!

I was about to post the questions covered in this thread, so it is useful to have found this.

I suspect that as long as Customs are not suspicious that the declaration label isn't fraudulent, they are unlikely to decide to check the package. In practice, if it is clearly from Tesco or Amazon, they can be pretty sure those companies are not going to commit fraud.

They will be more concerned about the people on eBay who will sell you an iPod from, say, the US, but misdescribe the package contents, so you evade VAT and customs duty.

Do the UK Distance Selling Regulations apply if you buy for a UK company but are supplied by a subsiduary outside the UK ?

have bought hundreds of dvd's from outside the UK.

    never been charged customs.

having said that they have all (except 1) been below the £18 limit.

anyone who buys dvd's on the high street is nuts.

Bit of a sweeping statement - a lot of people like to buy things and take them home with them, there and then :-)

How many DVDs do you reckon you have, to the nearest hundred?
Thanks to all who post constructively.
