Recommendations for Nice Hotel In Shrewsbury For One Night

Hiya. I want to take my OH away for a Saturday night on 20th May for night only. I have tried to find a cheap but nice hotel but most of the comparison sites don't recognise Shrewsbury or Shropshire so I can't use them. I have tried HotelComparison and Alpharooms but no luck - any suggestions please.
And if you have been there what do you recommend seeing?

I can't personally recommend a hotel but you'll find lots of info at https://www.virtual-shropshire.co.uk. If you haven't seen it before, do try and visit the world's first iron bridge, found in the small town of Ironbdrige which is about 14 miles SE of Shrewsbury.
Do enjoy your time in my part of the country :wave:0 -
Try The Lion Hotel(an old coaching inn and nice but a bit old fashioned)
The Prince Rupert(monica lewinsky stayed her on her visit to the town)
or The Lord Hill(a mile or so out of the town centre, but the most modern of the three)
Shrewsbury is one of the finest examples of a tudor town in england.Beautiful buildings and very easy to get around.
enjoy your visit :beer:0 -

Try the above site for hotels and B&B. I live in Shrewsbury, so have never spent a night in a hotel here.
personnally I'd go for an upmarket bed and breakfast in a nice big house around Shrewsbury. It's easy to drive in (parking is about £2.50 per day), or there are lots of buses and park and ride, so you don't need to be in the centre of town.
I've eaten at the Lion Hotel and the Lord Hill as the previous poster mentioned. The lion has nice olde worlde decor all chinzy- but the food is very bland and service amateur, the Lord Hill is little better than a holiday inn in my opinion - very bland, nothing special - it's also about a 10 minute walk from the centre.
Prince Rupert is mean't to be quite flash, as is the Albrighton Hall hotel and Albright Hussey (about 5 miles out of town).
Rowton Castle is very lovely - 4 poster beds, excellent homemade biscuits, lovely grounds - that's about 5 miles out of town too. The Mytton and Mermaid at Atcham always looks nice too http://www.shropshiretourism.info/accommodationdetail.cfm?EstID=61 by the river in Atcham (about 2 miles from centre)
Have a nice stay.Rhiannon of Woolamai
Thanks!

Albright Hussey was poor for the money as we got quite a small room. Albrighton Hall half a mile up the road although also expensive was far better IMHO.
Have also stayed at the Lion & Pheasant in the heart of the town and that was really fab as it has it's own carpark and was handy for going out into the town at night for food, drink or both without needing a taxi  as it can be horrendous to get one on a Saturday night
There's also the Wetherspoons pub, Shrewsbury Hotel which i've not stayed at, but again is in the heart of the town. Last October it was advertising Rooms at £45, but doesn't include brekkie and the pub doesn't now close until 1am so noise might be a problem
There's also lots of B&B's on the websites already mentioned, but they all seem to be similar price and I haven't stayed in any of them.
As for what to do, well being a local you tend not to do the tourist things  and it depends what you're into, but again virtual shropshire and shropshire tourism should give you a few ideas.
Have a fab time and enjoy my hometown.0 -
Miss Sunshine:
Had a look at the Lion & Pheasant which sounds lovely but website says only parking for 20 cars - . Love the idea of just getting there and parking the car until we leave on the Sunday. There website says parking for 20 cars but they have 27 rooms. What do you think the chances are of getting there on a saturday lunchtime and getting a parking space as we definitely don't want to have to find a car park or is this like asking how long is a piece of string. thanks.0 -
I would suggest that you book your meal for Saturday night well in advance as the last time I went to Shrewsbury we didn't book anywhere and ended up having a kebab which we had to sneak into the hotel. Also book your taxi as it seems that everyone in Shrewsbury goes out on a Saturday night. We came across a really nice Thai which although small, it was really friendly and good value for money. We stayed at the Albrighton Hall which is out of the town centre but it is part of the MacDonald chain -so its not cheap but it was really nice.0

We stayed on a thurs night so really don't know......best thing give them a call, see if they've got rooms for that night, ask how the carpark allocation works and what happens to the overspill.
There's a council run pay and display longstay carpark almost opposite and the council website indicates the charge would be £2.30 for 24 hours (St Julian Friars) and it suggests it's open on Sundays. The Abbey Foregate one is just over the English Bridge, but isn't 24 hours. Unfortunately I live overseas since I sold my house in Shrewsbury 5 years ago so can't check it out for you, sorry. Let us know what they say.0 -
The Lion and Pheasant never looks very attractive from the outside. It's at the bottom of Wyle Cop on the main road over the English bridge into town - never been in it though.
As for things to do in Shrewsbury - having a wander round is a good first option - looking at the shuts and passageways, in the Parade (an old hospital now speciality shops), walk along the river in the Quarry park (and visit the Dingle - a pretty bit in the centre of the Quarry with a pool, lots of rhoddedendrums and acers). The castle grounds are free (don't bother paying to go inside - it's a wierd military museum)
For lunch: I like: The bear steps, or Real Art gallery (by train/bus station). The old market hall is nice for a coffee. The nicest pubs are the Armoury (by the river), and the Bellstone.
Do book a restaurant on a saturday night - Peach Tree , Cafe Saffron,Rhiannon of Woolamai
Thanks!
