There are a couple of ways this could happen. The first more likely than the second:

    1) You paid SP what you owed based on an estimated reading, but then SP issued a final bill based on your final meter reading - in other words the energy used between your last payment (or at least the meter reading it was based on) and your opening meter reading from your new provider.

    2) Your payment wasn't credited to your account.

Number 2) is quite easy to check. For number 1) you need to check the bill for £276 and compare the closing meter reading to the opening meter reading from your new provider. Are you being billed for some energy twice? More likely, you haven't paid for this energy and it's now owing.

I would treat the bill and your complaint separately. By all means pursue your complaint if you feel you have been misled or treated unfairly, but if you delay paying what you owe while you sort out the complaint, you risk paying more in collection and admin charges than what you owed to start with.

Check your statements and compare actual (A) meter readings so that you can calculate what you owe (if anything). Then pay it or contact SP to arrange a payment plan. If there is any debate about what you have been charged, ask for your account to be put on hold while it's sorted - you need to check all your statements first so that you are clear about what you are disputing.
