Was my tyre knackered?

My wife had a puncture reckons she ran for about half a mile.

Tyre place say it is dead as there was a couple of hand fulls of rubber dust in the tyre so the side wall is knackered.

Just want to check that they is telling the truth.

Can't get a new one till Wednesday now  luckily we don't want to go anywhere. As we only have a space saver.

Depends how flat the tyre was over that half a mile.

  • Yes the tyre's had it.

The joys of space saver tyres, better than a tub of goo and a toy compressor that increasing numbers of new cars now come with.
Still whilst people still buy cars without a spare wheel they'll continue to supply them and pocket the savings.

Yes the tyre has busted. You can knacker a tyre in under 50 yards if its totally flat and wear one out in a day if its half deflated.

Yes, I did the same thing....changed the tyre as soon as I noticed.

Because I work for Michelin my tyres are fitted by the tyre fitter at my place of work - he showed me the rubber dust inside, said he was glad I hadn't taken it anywhere at speed.

He has nothing to gain from telling me porkies, so yes, unfortunately it's true, that you needed a new tyre.

Hope it's a Michelin you're getting:p Buy British and all that!!;)

Unfortunately it only have about 1500 miles on it sods law!

Sorry ailuro it's a Toyo T1R to match the the others its very difficult finding 195 55 R14 in a decent tyre (or 185 65 R14)

    I saw the dust.

Got it on order from Camskill (£55 delivered) they are delivering to the tyre place for me as they could not get one.

I rang the only Toyo dealer in the county could not even check stock levels at there supplier till Tues!!

Purely out of interest how do you rate the T1R's, i've got them on my RWD MB, apart from being noisy on the road i can't fault them...wet traction and grip is superb...are they as good on the much lighter MX5?

I had Goodyear F1's before (they don't make them any more in 14's) and I cant tell the difference really maybe the T1R's grip better in all conditions (certainly compared to a set of barely legal F1's)

I will be surprised if the T1R's manage 25000 miles like the F1's but then I think it unlikely we will drive the MX5 that far now as we both work within 2 miles instead of the 60 plus we were.

Noise wise, no real difference but the MX5 is not exactly quiet at motorway speeds as is at least doing 4000rpm (and it just cries out to be revved on the A roads!) and the roof is always down unless it is tipping it down light drizzle is not a problem.

The are consistently rated highly on the owners club website as a good all round tyre.

It is the damage caused to the Walls of the tyre that make it unsafe.

They are not designed to be flexed as much as they have to when running flat.

You have a better chance of repair the quicker you stop.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I've killed flat tyres in 50 yards too by driving on them when flat (I felt it was safer to drive on the and get somewhere safe rather than be a statistic).
