Very few payphones accept coins nowadays. All the ones around here are credit/debit card only. Probably because so few people ever use them that it's not worth the hassle of sending an engineer round to collect the cash.
This is very true. There is a payphone near me that BT wanted to remove because its used less than once per month. They had to consult about the removal and put a notice in the box for several months. Someone objected to the closure and its still there. I wonder how much it costs to maintain and run the box and how big a loss it makes.

Three calls to answer phones cost me over £10 the other day too - plus a card validation fee. I don't think it is bt, certainly the prices are higher than those stated by bt - perhaps they've franchised put the credit/debit card bit of the service What I'd like to know though, is can they just charge what they like if they don't tell you in advance what you're going to pay?
