I'm looking at setting up a remote desktop system to allow a laptop to remote desktop to a computer located somewhere else, but staying within my home network. Both computers run XP home, I've looked at the windows remote desktop client, but that seems to only support XP pro. Any ideas as to how I should go about it?
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

You could try using tightvnc0

If you're looking for something straight forward have a look at Team Viewer (http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx). It works through firewalls etc and can be set up to "listen" all the time so you can log in as and when it's needed.0

Why not use logmein, its free, easy to use,0

Have a look at http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/14/install-and-enable-remote-desktop-in-windows-xp-home-edition/

Does the ask for remote assistance in windows live work with all XPflavours? I have only used it with XP?0

Yes, but that's entirely different, as it requires someone at the remote machine to grant permission for interactivity.
Remote Desktop can be activated in XP Home - see the link above.te audire non possum. musa sapientum fixa est in aure.0 -
I already do use LogMeIn, but when I'm inside my home network, it seems a little silly to go through LogMeIn's servers to get there.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

VNC is the easiest way, install server at the server end, client on the controlling pc0

All that Logmein does is set up the encryption protocol, then the 2 computers find the shortest/fastest route between themselves, the main traffic does not go via Logmein - in your case this route could be within your own home network. Why bother installing anything extra if Logmein is working well?0
