signs of a faulty exhaust?
hey there, bout to get the car mot'd and I'm wondering what are the tell tale signs of an exhaust on its last legs? I'm dubious that it may come up as a problem area in the mot or fail on this and want to be prepared for such.
Problem being I know very little about said subject!
the car is a p-reg rover 200sd - cheers.

Noise!
You can put your hand over the end (when it's cold only!) to check for leaks.
Look underneath and gauge its general condition.....0 -
You'll know about it if it has blown, you can hear it coming a mile off. Someone in my road has had a blown exhaust for a few weeks now, but they seem oblivious to it or just too lazy to fix it. What a muppet.0

Why would you think that your exhaust is going to be a problem?
If it isn't leaking and isn't falling off, it isn't a problem.0 -
As davetrousers says, put your hand over the end of the exhaust and listen for hissing from along the pipe, also you should feel the exhaust gasses pushing against your hand trying to escape, I am assuming that it is still as i was when I say that eventually the car will stall if you block the exhaust and it has no leaks?Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p0

Some people go to a great deal of effort to make their cars sound like the exhaust is full of holes !If you will the end, you must will the means.0 -

I thought my exhaust was on its last legs as it looked like it was all rusted up and chunks of metal kept falling off it. No noise though. I took the car into kwik fit and looked at it and said it's quite normal is it has a 'second skin' and it's just shedding the outer layer and it's good for another couple of years! And it was!If you will the end, you must will the means.0
