Hand luggage or suitcase ?

I'm travelling to the US shortly and can never remember what should/is best to go where. Help appreciated.

Batteries
Alcohol (actually cans of Stella)
Deodorant/Hairsprays
Gifts eg. chocolate, tea bags, hot chocolate

Thanks,

Batteries - are we talking AA style ones here? If so probably best in carry on.

Can are a very bad idea in the hold as they may explode when the pressure drops! you will have to carry them on as hand luggage "duty free style"

Deodorant / Hairspray - if roll on / non gas then wherever you want. if cans then it may burst in the hold, so you need to have them in carry on.

Chocolate etc is fine in either in terms of regulations. Things in the hold will get squashed / dropped etc but there is only so much you can carry on as hand luggage ... personally I would put them in the hold and keep your hands free for teh beer :)

I am only a very frequent flyer not an expert so dont take this a gospel.

Batteries can go either place, but if you put them in your checked baggage, it's best to remove them from the object. You will be asked if you have anything in the checked luggage that has batteries - it happens everytime and yet I always have to think about it. Aerosols can go in either place (provided they're in small quantities for personal use). If you check them, put them in sealed plastic bags in case they do burst. The beer is dodgy - if you put them in your checked baggage you have the possibility of the bursting issue, if you carry them on, you could run afoul of the airlines "no alcohol unless duty free, or purchased on board, and definitely no drinking that alcohol". Personally, I wouldn't bring it - too heavy, too much hassle.

Any food type gifts should be in the original packaging.

When you enter the US, if you have a connecting flight, you will be required to go through security screening again. At this point you will need (not required, suggested, and it will make things go so much quicker) to remove your shoes, and anything that has a quantity of metal on it (belt buckles, jewelry etc) Also, if you or a travelling companion are female I would suggest no underwire bras - unless you want a pat down!

Also, don't forget no lighters or matches in the carryon, even safety matches. The only thing like that allowed is match books. Here's a link to the tsa fact sheet
