Hi,
We have recently bought a new Dell PC with Windows Vista and have been getting the following error message upon start up of the PC:
Application failed to initialize: 0x80010ba. A problem caused this program’s service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support for how to start a service manually.
I think it relates to Windows Defender? I have downloaded the program to reinstall Windows Defender but when I try to run that it says I don't need to install it because I have already got Defender, but I cannot find a way of uninstalling the problem one completely.
Can anyone help please? Let me know if you need any more info from me.
Thanks,
Louise

It may be that windows defender has been comprimised by some malware and is not able to start.. If you have any other virus checker istalled then run that and see what it turns up. If you do not have any other security then get some, free one being AVG free.
Check the tasjk manager and see if defender is running. If so then the problem may relate to another problem.
If windows states the application is already installed, it should give the option to reinstall anyway.
IMO win defender is rubbish and should be uninstalled anyway, Use ccleaner free, after the uninstallation to get any remenents out of the system then try and reinstall if you want. (reboot the machine ) download from https://www.filehippo.comNudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -
Thanks Wakandem, we also currently have McAfee-is that a suitable substitute for Windows Defender?
I can't find anywhere to uninstall Defender...I have already 'uninstalled it' via the control panel, but it is still there when I go into the Security section of the control panel. Any ideas on how I can get rid of it once and for all?
Thanks,

Id hazard a guess your problem is probably mcafee. Why do you think its to do with defender?:idea:0

The 0x80010ba error message prompt box says Windows Defender on the edge. Sorry, should have made that clearer in the original post.Getting Married 19/02/110

Ok
hmmm. Not sure WHAT to suggest really. Windows defender comes with vista as standard so trying to remove it may not have helped. Having said that, it isnt actually a PART of vista that im aware of.
I would suggest bringing up the list of services and shutting down the WINDOWS DEFENDER one
Then attempt to reinstall
If that doesnt work then REVO UNINSTALLER might work but you might find it makes things even worse so I cant actually recommend that.:idea:0 -
Thanks, How do I bring up the list of services?Getting Married 19/02/110

it sounds like defender may have uninstalled but as there some remenents it tries to start but cannot. As some remenants exist it will not reinstall as windows thinks it is still there. If this is the case then it shouldn't be a problem, just click ok when you get 'application failed to start' message and continue as normal. Try ccleaner on your system it may get rid of it and then if you want you can reinstall defender.
mcaffe is enough protection as long as it is updated regularly. I don't think much of defender and don't have it installed.Nudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -
use revo uninstaller to completely remove WD, then, if you must, reinstall it..
would be better with MBAM and SAS, IMHO......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0
