Why, whenever we have any sort of socializing element on a thread, do they always sweep it off to the Money Savers Arms or Discussion Time?

FWIW I don't think its necessary. i doubt it would stop us all veering OT on on topic threads (which I think can be useful both to give a whole picture understanding of the POV of a contributer and the backstory which has lead to their opinion/interpretation) and it keeps us somewhat colleagiate.
The long threads like the pinned one on HPs I almost never look at. I see something like this becoming an outlet for bullying and aggression as much as socialising.0
