I phoned up my local branch today to see if they were still doing this, which they were, but said "There was no cake left."
I made my way into town and took a couple of very nice reusable carrier bag for life did some shopping and came out and saw they had replenished their supply of cake yaaaay so I took two bits and the lady also was giving away teabags - single teabags - too which I think was very nice indeed.0 -

We've got two Sainsburys round here. One didn't have any cake or bags, whilst the other had the bags in place of orange bags at the checkout (i.e. help yourself).0

Went to Sainsbury's today for a big shop. Got 2 bags from the check out lady, asked for one more as had lots of heavy stuff - but as had about 12 bags altogether could have done with more!!

Think Sainsbury's doing this still. Got one today. Seems it depends on the person at the checkout - if they are willing, they hand it out.0

Spora, if you see some black/grey coloured reusable bags at Sainsbury's, may be you can ask the person at checkout to give you that instead of the usual orange ones. They are free. I have seen a person asking for that bag at the checkout. And the assistant was quite happy to give him one.0
