Tesco 0% card available for existing (but dormant) accounts?

Options
Dear all, I haven't used a credit card for absolutely years, I always use debit card. However I've decided to get a card, especially for larger purchases as some of the stories about not getting money back when using debit cards worry me a bit. I see from Martin's article that Tesco is the best card for 0% purchases so as I have no balance transfers and as it may well happen that I don't pay it off at the end of the month, this seems the best to go for. Until I remembered that I still have a Tesco card from ages ago, in fact it has a £36 credit balance on it for some reason. I'm going to ring them tonight after work but I wondered if anyone knows whether they would offer me the 0% deal to start using it again after a long time, in the same way as a new account. If not, I'll close it, get my money back and look elsewhere.

Has anyone any experience of that? Or are the rules set in stone that the 0% rate is for real first timers only.

Thanks

DS

  • No harm in phoning them up and asking. If they say no then close the account (and then they'll probably offer it you!).

The rules are definitely not set in stone. You can get 0% rate

No such luck I'm afraid, maybe I'm not assertive enough but when I rang them they made it very clear it's only for new customers.

So it's back to the research for me I'm afraid, I'll have to go with the next best card rate for purchases. What a pain, I was really hoping I could use it with the 0%. I should've cancelled ages ago and then I could've taken out a new one.

    Thanks, DS
