WARNING: Memory Foam Mattress Company - BUYER BEWARE!

In December 2007 I purchased a "Luxury Silver" memory foam mattress from the online company The Memory Foam Mattress Firm. After only a year the mattress started to dip in the middle. The problem became worse and we ended up with a ridge down the middle of the mattress, and a dip in each side, right where our hips lie, and right where these sort of mattresses are supposed to provide maximum support and "relief from pressure points". Over the last few months I have contacted the company by telephone no less than 14 times and on every occasion I have been given some kind of excuse, for example, that the manager I need to speak to is away/ in a meeting/ not in that day etc. Finally, today, after sending in photos, emails, and all those phone calls I have been told that this is due to general wear and tear and/ or misuse of the mattress and that as stipulated in their terms and conditions there is nothing they can do. This is outrageous! I weigh less than 9 stone, my husband is only 12 stone, the mattress was never moved or mistreated so how can a mattress life be only just over a year? Who replaces their mattress on a yearly basis? On a personal level, I am now 6 months pregnant and in considerable discomfort, plus we don't have the money to go buying new mattresses, especially in the current economic climate!

By all means, take your chances buying a mattress from their so-called "sale" (although I have never seen them advertise their mattresses at full price which suggests that the sales are bogus as well and just another ploy to hook you into buying one of their sub-standard products) but do so at your own risk. It may seem like you are saving money, but after a year or so you will have to fork out the money for yet another mattress. I have also contacted BBC's Watchdog about this company and would strongly recommend that you do not buy anything from them.

It's a shame, OP, that you did not consult the web before your purchase. There are a number of sites devoted to pointing out the failings of the Memory Foam Mattress Co.
    Examples: -
    http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews86958.html
"Expensive waste of money. Wish I had read the reviews first."
"I've found my Memory Foam mattress sags quite severely after only 1 year"
" And now every month I call or mail ( I have mail trails going back since 2nd july) and ..."

All saying much the same as you did. There is also a thread on this very site: -

Again. not utterly complimentary towards the MFM Co...

Interestingly, there is a site that states "Under the Sale of Goods Act you should be able to claim as a mattress is supposed to last for around 10 years I think" - see http://www.ukparentslounge.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=http://www.ukparentslounge.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=92985&p=925861

So perhaps someone could draft you a nice letter to send to the company stating this....

could you not turn the mattress over or does it not work like that?

Their mattresses like most (but not all) memory foam mattresses on the market are non turn. So if you turn it over then you will be on the reflex foam side. Even non turn mattresses should be rotated end to end on a regular basis.

I suspect that it is the reflex foam layer that has degraded, as memory foam usually lasts longer, but reflex foam is more prone to degrading.
