Ring dilemma

After nearly 9 years together (and a good few years of lurking on here!) we are now engaged (yippeee!) and plan to get married next year.
Like everyone I am torn between getting every last detail as I have imagined it for years (as I will only do this once) and getting value for money for everything (as we don't have a lot and because I hate to feel like I am being extravagant!).
I know what I want - a white metal about 2mm wishbone band with the tiniest diamond chip in it for decoration. However, I can't find this anywhere and I've asked for quotes for it to be made for me but I don't know how much to expect.
The only quote I have had so far is for 9ct white gold (non rhodium? plated) which is a 2.5 mm band with a small flush inset diamond which is £185 and would be £145 for the matching wedding ring.
Does that sound ok?
Initially I wanted silver but have been told it won't last long enough. Ideally I want palladium but the shop I have the quote from based the above quote on a stock ring whereas they say it will be much more for palladium as it will be entirely custom (even though the price of palladium is pretty low at the mo).
I feel really guilty spending £290 on both rings! Plus what I really want is the hand hammered matt version from the shop I am awaiting quotes from but figure they will be a lot lot more!
I have seen another ring I love in silver for £55 which is 2 separate rings - one is matt silver, the other normal with 3 tiny diamonds in it. I could use this as engagement and wedding ring (and they are beautiful) but they are each about 1mm thick. I know they won't last as long as the marriage!
Does anyone have advice? I know there are lots of ring thread but I gather I am looking for something a little less sparkly than most (so am not concerned about the 4 cs!) and am not sure it will be worth heading to the jewellery q!

Decide what you want and go for it. job done then you can concentrate on more important matters without mithering.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

My engagement ring's an incredibly thin band - probably about 1mm wide and it's lasted quite well really (although we did get it insured for 5 years and have had to claim once when I got my hand jammed moving house and everything got mangled). And I'm not nice to rings at all - wear them lugging boxes around work and everything.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0

Thanks DB - can I ask what it is made out of?
Thanks0 -
none rhodium white gold? What is it dipped in then? There is no such metal as white gold..
I got our palladium rings from The Beeautiful Company and a standard 3mm ring is currently £75!

Hi, just thought i would mention amazon. Was just having a browse and thought it there is a diamond wishbone style ring for under £42.
Can't post a link as a new user, but look at diamond rings and sort by best sellers.

Ok - down to choice of 2!
It is the same set of rings (engagement and wedding) but a choice of metals.
It is £164 in total for silver and £442 for Palladium.
Is it worth paying the extra (in terms of wear and durability) as they will look the same?0 -
I don't know about palladium but silver bends fairly easily and can dent.
I personally wouldn't go for silver rings if I was going to wear them every single day as I know I'd scratch them and bend them out of shape too easily (and I don't even have a manual job - I work in an office!!)
It's taken me 3 years to bend my white gold wedding ring - currently in the jewelers being sorted :rolleyes:working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
I went to the Birmingham Jewellery quarter and got a ring made to use an emerald stone I had - for the band (about 6mm wide I think) with some cut out detail and the stone set it it, in 9ct white gold it was about £150-200.
They said to do it in silver would only be about £40 cheaper but the ring wouldn't be worth nearly as much and wouldn't be as long lasting.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
i really wouldn't go for silver. as others have said it is pretty soft. I have had silver rings go out of shape for no particular reason. They also scratch easily and more deeply than other metals (i know all metals scratch to a certain extent). this means you'll be polishing it more, and with a thin ring it will wear down that much quicker. Go for palladium. I know its more expensive but you are going to wear this for the rest of your life.0

It might be a bit late now but my sister has a white gold wishbone ring from H Samual (still sell it) with diamonds in, which sounds exactly what you are looking for - it did snap after 2 years though.0
