no audio on skype

A plea from a broke aussie friend in France: she has downloaded skype 4 times on her daughter's new Toshiba laptop, at last it accepts her username but she can only type-chat as she can't get the audio to work. The test call after installation doesn't work. The audio on the PC works fine for everything else.
She's tried contacting skype but they don't reply.
I said I would ask the experts here!!

Difficult to help when you don't know what she's doing, what she knows, what she's tried etc.
Always easier to talk someone through it realtime.
