There's an existing thread with lots of information and advice on bulking out meals so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

HJ. At the risk of asking obvious question, do you weigh out the quantity of mince and weigh the same amount of lentils? Ive not got beyond adding handfuls so it would be good to know it can be done like that and still not be noticeable.A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Hi zippy :hello:
I just do it by eye and have actually reduced some of the rd lentils in bolognese as I was finding it a bit dry. Just experiment with what suits you.0 -
Incidentally I don't know if this helps anyone but this year I have found bags of frozen Quorn 'mince' reduced to 99p a couple of times in the supermarket- obviously not very popular. I'm not veggie so don't know what tastes like on its own but I keep a bag in the freezer and add a handful of that as well as a handful of lentils to mince dishes- even more bulk but not at all noticeable!0

Basics bags of onions are very cheap in Mr S's, about a quid for a big big bag. 4p jar of curry sauce, a couple of potatoes, two cloves of garlic, tons of finely sliced onions and a small amount of frozen lamb mince = very very cheap curry night!0

I do 1½lb mince 2 good handsful of oats and 1 of orange lentils and this stretches the mince into 2 meals for the four of us when used as bolog/chilli.My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman0 -
What is it that you all recommend to put in with mince etc to bulk it out a bit.
My oh is always saying that I never give him enough so I was wondering what it was that you all put in with it to pad it out0 -
I use either red lentils or oats - either is good and no-one can tell!!! :rotfl:Anywhere is within walking distance - if you have the time!!0

I usually use lentils but also have been known to cut it with tvp (dried soya protein) which bulks out very well and you can't taste the difference. Lentils makes a different sort of texture - still nice, but definitely not mince...0
