Economy 7 and Direct Debit mix up!

We've had a lot of hassle with our gas and electric provider Scottish Power.

First off they didn't take our Direct Debit for a year (as we didn't notice, we ended up having to pay double for the following year) and now I've just realised our Economy 7 meter rates are mixed up. It seems we've been paying the night rate during the day and vice versa. I haven't got onto Scottish Power and told them yet - and indeed, don't know whether to. Obviously, our bills have been lower than they should have been (hurrah!) but on the downside - are we liable? If I phone Scottish Power and point out the error, are we going to have to spend another year paying the cash we owe them back - even though the error is theirs? We genuinely didn't realise until I checked the meter this morning (I was trying to find out if we were paying the cheapest rate available) and this has probably been going on for around 2 years! Any advice gratefully received.
