New Card... Play.com vs. Tesco?

Options
Hi guys,

In the market for a new card. Been quite annoyed with the Barclaycard, as previously I was on their travel rewards card. They have now put me on their pathetic cashback card, and it ain't doing much for me.

Just to give you a little background, I always pay off the balance at end of each month, so the interest rate does not matter, and nither does the balance transfer. What I'm interested mostly is the cashback, or rewards.

So, I figure time to get a new card. So, I've been looking around, and so far the two that seem the most promising are:

1. Play.com - Offer 1 point for every £1 spent outside of Play.com, and 2 points for every £1 spent on Play.com. They say on the website that 500 play points = £5 in vouchers. So, calculated, this turns out to be: £5 voucher / £500 = 1% rewards. Not too bad.

2. Tesco Club Card - Here the offer is 1 point for every £4 spent outside of Tesco, and 5 points for every £4 spend at Tesco. Then, 100 points = £1 in club card points. So, in essense, for me to get close to the Play.com £5 voucher, and suppose I do all my shopping outside Tesco, then I will have to spend 500 point * £4 = £2000. So, breaking this down, we get £5 / £2000 = 0.25% rewards.

I know at the moment, it seems like Tesco club card is a bad choice given the percentages, but Tesco club card also offers things like conversion to Airmiles for which in the above example, I'd get 120 miles.

I hope I haven't made this too confusing... just wanted to get your thoughts on this.

Any recommendations?

- The confused credit card guy...

The 0% is longer with tesco and the % is actually 1% if you factor in clubcard rewards are 4 x the money.
Depends if you shop in tesco/would use the rewards or if you shop with play.

I use a combination of cards to maximise cashback (now that there is very little advantage in SBTs).
    1. Amex- initial 5% cashback for 3 months and after crossing £3500 spend - 1%.
    2. Citi Shell - 3% on Shell fuel spend & 1% on all other. (Combine shell fuel spend with shell driversclub rewards (£2.50/500 points where 1point=£1) you get 3.5% cashback total from shell fuel spend
    3. Tesco clubcard creditcard - use only for Tesco purchases together with clubcard which effectively gives 2.25% cashback vouchers (though the vouchers have 4x value on other rewards). Use it for Tesco fuel together with clubcard and now with the double points offer it gets you 3.25% cashback

I think with a Tesco Credit Card the Clubcard is already incorporated in it, so if you are using a separate Clubcard in addition to the Credit Card, you will not be getting any points on it.

On Tesco's website they say you will get 5 clubcard points when spending £4 in Tesco and 1 clubcard point for using the Credit Card outside of Tesco. This means you are actually getting 1 clubcard point for every £4 you are spending in or out of Tesco. The reason you are earning an extra 4 points in Tesco is because the Credit Card is also the clubcard which you would have got using just a normal clubcard anyway.

Remember Tesco cards is RBS so if you recently been refused with RBS then you may not get a Tesco.....
