Blue Badge & DLA

Options
Hope soemone may be able to help me with this question. If you have applied for a Blue Badge and been awarded it should you also be awarded DLA if you have also applied for that? The reason I ask is that on the Blue Badge application form it asks if you are able to walk 40 metres. The same type of question relating to the distance you can walk is on the DLA application. Both parties do contact your GP for clarification on this. So why would one award (blue badge) and not the other???? I apprieciate that DLA have other questions on their form but walking is the main part in the mobility component.

No its the other way around and only if you get the higher mobility component. My daughter was in that position we had to apply for both separate due being turned down initially for DLA so we applied for BB then applied later for DLA

You can get a blue badge without DLA but you may need evidence that your eligible and will need to go for a test to prove eligibility

Sorry a little confused Savemoney. I have been awarded a Blue Badge but have been turned down for DLA. So should I ring DLA and say "that I have been awarded a Blue Badge so how come I have been declined DLA?"
This is all new to me and I find it all totally baffling. Surely if the Blue badge dept provide a badge on the information they have received from both my Gp and myself the DLA should award DLA. Hope I make sense. Thanks for the advice.

the council can issue a blue badge to people who are not entitled to DLA HM at their discretion so no, having a blue badge is not an automatic passport to DLA.

Each council has there own criterea, with HRM you automatically are entitled to a BB. At their discretion the council can award a BB if they feel there would be some benefit for you. DLA seems to be a lot stricter on their criterea probably because they are giving you money every week.

The discretionary blue badge rules are very lax, some places give them to people who can run a marathon though they have been informed that it is against the law to do so.

For higher rate mobility DLA you have to be unable to walk or virtually unable to walk and you must prove it to the DM for that award.

Thanks for the replies. I am in considerable pain at the onset of walking and need a walking aid to get from A to B. I can walk approx 40 metres with the walking aid however I am never free from pain whilst walking. According to DLA I am able to walk, makes me wonder how someone can come to this decsion through reading an application form without actually seeing the candidate. But hey ho we will see what happens as and when I have my appeal.!!

You can appeal DLA in the month following you rejection/award or reapply if you condition changes at any time.

Seek advise from CAB or the like and see where you can go, good luck.

Getting a blue badge doesn't entitle you automatically to DLA is completely separate even though if you get higher rate mobility component of dla you get a blue badge. As said its at the discretion of your local council

As I mentioned we did it the other way around blue badge then dla, got turned down for both, twice for dla and had to appeal

If you have got turned down and you feel a strong case then get help, and also dont hang around they may not always back adte the full amount of you arent quick to respond
