You could always learn Big Two aka Deuces: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Two
For some reason, I have only played amongst fellow Chinese/Vietnamese people..."Who throws a shoe, honestly?"

Fish?
You start with 7 cards each. Put remainder in pile in middle. Idea is to get 4 of the same number. When you've got 4 of a kind you take them out your hand and place them in a pile in front of you. The one with the most piles wins.
So to start, for example, look at your hand and see what number you'd like to try and get a 4 of a kind. Ask the other person if they have it. If they do, they have to hand over all the cards of that number. You then ask them for a different number. if they have that, they hand them over. You continue like this until they don't have a number. At this point they tell you to "fish" and you pick a card up from the middle pile. Y
our opponent then asks you for a number and you do the same (either hand over the appropriate card or tell her to "fish".) Game continues until all cards have been used and placed into piles of 4. Count how many piles of 4 you have and the most piles wins.
If at any point one player has no cards left in their hand they just pick a number at random and hope to snatch some off you.
This is one of my faves and a bit different to rummy.0 -
We always take cards with us on holiday and mostly we play crib. Do you know how to play? We also play rummy and if you have two packs you can play canasta.0

This is one of the greatest 2 player games you can play it combines luck and skill. Everyone I have shown it to is adicted to it. You can change the rules slightly which can be a laugh

Lost cities is similar since it was done by the same designer (Reiner Knizia):

Blue Moon is a bit more advanced and a great game: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fantasy-Flight-Games-4098636-Blue/dp/1589941365/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=kids&qid=1242947794&sr=1-1

You've got a wealth of info here if you want to discover new games for 2 players - all of these games have english versions. As you will soon sadly find out, the german versions are much cheaper, so lots of people (in the US and in the UK) buy them in german and get the english instructions online.

Do give these a try. Buy one (I would recommend lost cities, which comes in a very portable box) and if it rains, try it. There are lots of boardgame online stores and stores (for instance in London and elsehwere in the UK), so you will have no trouble with the selection.
Good luck.0
