dial-up Wi-Fi ?

Hello
I was thinking of getting a wifi laptop for my mum, the only problem is that she is on dial up and it is not worth getting broadband for what she uses.

Does anyone know of any gadgets or wireless modems that would allow her to use the wi-fi for dial-up?. The best i have found so far are wireless phone extenders which can make your nearest three pin plug into an phone socket. This would still be cable tied so is not perfect and they say the dial up speed will be reduced to 33 kbs or so.

I was wondering if any had come across anything better, ideally which would use the wi-fi.

Cheers

You can get broadband as cheap as dialup these days, I am sure I have seen PAYG broadband.Certianly broadband can be as cheap at less than £15 per month. Fine for people who use little bandwith.

I woudl certianly opt for boardband than dialup even for only a few hours per week.

Thank you for all the replies.

Unfortunately dial up is a must.

The BT wireless extension is good apart from the requirement of an extra box to plug into usb.

The apple airport idea is very good and it seems to fit the bill exactly, i have had a look on ebay and the apple stuff seems quite expensive although an older "graphite" one went for about 16 a little while ago. Only concern is being able to control connection on XP, seems you have to rely on time out feature of modem.

Did a bit more digging and another option is to get a wireless base unit with a serial input, which you can then attach an external modem to and use. (probably a bit too much of a faff)

    Will continue investigating.

    any more ideas are welcome.

    cheers :T

An old compaq wifi point I have does just this - it is meant for a network broadband connection but also has a built in modem for backup access, however if you make sure the WAN port is always down it will auto connect when needed
