Primera being withdrawn - effect on resale price?

I've liked the latest Primera since it was introduced and recently decided to purchase a 'nearly new' model (to avoid the sharp initial depreciation). The dealer let me test drive a diesel and I was quite impressed. However, when I questioned why only the 1.8 petrol is being offered new I was told that the Primera is being discontinued in a couple of months, as is the Almera - and they will not be replaced.

I know when a model is being replaced the old version drops like a stone in value. Anybody got thoughts on what might happen to values / saleability in this case? Also, any alternatives which offer such a good level of standard equipment and value?

  • It's been around since 2002. It's a good car but Nissan have always been plagued by poor image in this market. They're keeping the Micra as it sells well. I was told a new car will be introduced but it will be nothing like the Primera. It will be 4 wheel drive and have 'suicide' rear doors, like the RX-8. A completely different market.

Unfortunately as has been previously mentioned the Primera suffers an image problem in an already crowded market sector. They drop like a stone in value anyway however you buy one!....If your really set on one at least go for one a couple of years old and let someone else take the savage depreciation!....and yes Nissan won't be replacing either the Almera or Primera due to slow sales...but will be offering a cross over vehicle to fit between both sectors. If you speak to certain people in the Motortrade they will tell you that the new Note has in affect killed any prospective Almera sales so watch out for this new car to replace the Primera in the next year or so.

My local dealer has just acquired an 05 2.0 Petrol Auto SVE with 7,000 miles and is offering it for £12995. What with the leather, sat nav, reversing camera, etc. it seems tempting - depending on the p/x offered, of course. This is about £500 under the Parkers Main Dealer value and represents about 69% retained value after 1 year. [New price was around £19K.] What Car Estimated retained value after 3 years is 37%. I know that's bad - the Mazda 6 is 52% - but it is on a par with the Mondeo and Vectra. However, is it likely to be even worse than the What Car estimated 37% when the model is discontinued?

I'd say it'll be worth considerably less than 37% after 3yrs!....if you think about it both the Mondeo & Vectra only have weak RV's because of there 'Fleet factor' i.e company/hire cars etc and the manufacturer willing to offer mega % discounts to the car leasing companies to shift thousands of units....the primera drops like a stone but its definately not because of the aforementioned ;) ..plus both the vectra and especially the mondeo are actually a really good drive and ownership proposition (as long as your not buying new)...or as you mentioned go for a safer option along the lines of...Mazda6, honda Accord, Toyota Avensis, VW Passat..anything but a damn primera :rotfl:

You're right of course - you've got me thinking, why am I so keen on the Primera? Answer - It's all the standard equipment! Not the best basis to make a decision to spend this amount of money on.

Why not look to do a PCP?

That way there will be a minimum value set in stone in 3 years time..
