Where to sell?

I've just ordered a new car and I want to sell my current one privately. Its only about a year and a half old, still under warranty and in immaculate condition. I am lucky enough to be able to afford to hang onto it until I get the new one and sell it then avoiding the rip-off trade in.

Does anyone have any good experiences with the big mags, websites etc? I will get it valeted and put it in the local paper but I wondered if there was anywhere else I should list it?

Also whats the best way of taking payment, its gonna be around 10k. Last time I sold a car for this kind of money I took a bankers draft but the bank wouldn't verify they had drawn it up before I handed over the car - do they ever get forged nowdays?

Jeez this turned into a long question!

Local paper for a 10 grand car is probably not the best place to be honest.

Autotrader is a good start, you may get the usual canvassers but just ignore them, add into your ad "no canvassers" but dont hold your breath.

Ebay is another hit or miss. You could get more than you expected or you could end up losing out. There are a lot of timewasters on Ebay. It really depends on the make and model as to how many timewasters you get. I sell sports cars and i avoid Ebay like the plague now due to the endless test pilots you have to entertain.

I would start it off in Autotrader and see how it goes. If its at a good price, nice car and well looked after you shouldnt have too much problem selling it off quickly.

Another possibility for you is too look into having a local dealer putting it onto your forecourt. I have done this for people in the past. It means that the dealer will show your car to prospective buyers thus saving you the hassle. It also means that you should get slightly more for the vehicle. The downside is that the dealer wont do this for free, a small commision will be payable.

I think the Trader is your best bet, and as you said put it into the local paper, you have nothing to lose.

Agreed. Autotrader is bit pricier than other publications to advertise in, but has by far the best results!!

As Burbs says, if you've a local garage, with a SECURE forecourt & it's someone you can trust, this is a good idea.

You will need to maintain insurance & keep it taxed, or SORN notify the DVLA, if tax expired.

Have you been offered a REALLY bad trade in deal - or is just true value? Don't forget there are lots of excellent deals around - as you've probably found out, with your new car!!

As for Autotrader, I'm not a big fan - lots of over enthusiastic prices in there!!

YUou can advertise free http://www.honestjohn.co.uk for a week.

    Good luck!!

  • Thanks for all of your help and advice. I'll definately try Autotrader along with the local rag. I've never been a big fan of trade in deals and have always managed to sell privately before, only once for a car of this value though and to be honest as it was my Dads car and he had just passed away I can't really remember a lot about how easily it went.

I have recently sold our car via autotrader, put it on the web for two weeks with no response, then put it in the magazine for two weeks and sold it on the first day the second magazine was out for the asking price.

i tried both a local paper with no response and e-bay but as fairly high value £8000 alot of time wasters. I was offered 5.5k as a trade in on a new Skoda Fabia vRS but got 8k in autotrader

I would reccomend autotrader, but did get loads of cavansing (?) calls. One company called me 15 times over the four weeks it was advertisied for.

    Regards
