SATA drive, why can't I see it?

I've just connected up an 80GB SATA drive to my system. (Also running an old 12GB drive on IDE.)
The PC spots it during boot up, but will not show it when XP has loaded.
Have I missed a step out??

didnt think you could mix SATA and IDE....
prove me wrong, people.... prove me wrong....This is not an automated signature. I write this at the bottom of every message0 -
Have you formatted the drive? If not go into control panel and click on computer management disk management and format your hard drive from there.
sata hard drives come on their own cable and connect to the motherboard, they are not like ide cables as they are really thin.I'm not poor i'm just skint0 -
You can mix SATA and IDE quite happily. You could even have a SCSI hard drive if you wanted.
Perhaps an obvious question, but have you formatted the drive?
You can do this by choosing Start>Run and typing "diskmgmt.msc". This should show the SATA drive and allow you to create and format a partition. (I'm typing this on my Mac so I can't tell you the exact steps to take.)0 -
I just said that, Have you formatted the drive? If not go into control panel and click on computer management disk management and format your hard drive from there.

SATA HDD's are not as 'plug & Play' as an IDE HDD
Quite often you require a Driver to enable it to function with XP.
You can visit either your motherboad manufacturers website or the HDD manufacturers website.
There you should find compatible drivers to enable your SATA drive to bee seen after 'bootup'
I've been there.......
When installing XP on a NEW Sata HDD, XP asks at the beginning if you want to load '3rd party drivers' and if so you have to Press 'F6'(From memory - i think it's worded a bit different)
After it has loaded a load of files it then prompts you to load the SATA drivers.
Hope this helps you on your quest to get it sorted.....
Don't forget to THANK ME !!

Yes you may need a driver I did for mine, as I have both IDE and SATA. I also needed an adaptor for power to convert a IDE power cable to one a SATA connector needed.0

And now its showing as unallocated, where is the option to format to NTFS cause I can't see it!Waddle you do eh?0
