  • Apparently so - my daughter borrowed my Garmin for a recent trip in Europe and was very impressed.

I think I had better get a book for the road signs. I was also wondering about a Sat Nav. Are they useful abroad?
I find mine invaluable. I do not get lost in cities and no matter what I do I know it will get me home. I have a Tomtom and one of the features is to take me to "last docked". This means I go to a new town, park, then go walkabout. When I am done the sat nav will take me to my parked car.
    Something Really Interesting

Yep, I would fully recommend TomTom as the best abroad.

When I was in Belgium, it took us directly to the nearest car park to the town, then we took the sat nav with us so it could direct us back to our car.

I would definately recommend looking up some of the most common road signs there as well, as some of them are slightly different to ours, most are the same though

We have driven all over Europe over the last 20 odd years, and I would say that the introduction of Sat Nav was one of the best helpers for driving any where abroad. We too have a Garmin and we called it fondly 'Marie' on out last tour two years ago. Even Paris is a dream to navigate on the Periferique with this, never got lost. I must say I support our travels with printed google maps, which I also find very useful. You will find the roads in France generally quite easy to drive on, both motorway and 'A' roads. I think the best thing is to take your time and be aware of what's going on around you, you will enjoy your trip I am sure.

A small tip that I found helpful, especially on quiet country roads, is that I, the driver, had to be in the middle of the road.

We were doing that unwittingly and then veering left to give space to an oncoming car. :-D

A few years ago, I was in France with friends. We drove over from here, and used our car for driving everywhere.

The holiday is a competition win (see my signature) and the car hire is included as are flights from Scotland :)

BGring me. I;ll drive and you can just admire the view...;)

But if thats not an option, just take your time, remember the golden rule, If in doubt, dont. Be especially careful at junctions and even more so when there is LESS traffic around as your mind can easily slip into left hand drive mode when there is no foreign traffic to reference.

Without a doubt. I had driven all over Europe and the US with a tomtom one and it is brilliant. Not only does it oint you the right way and allow you to concentrate on driving instead of map reading and falling out with your navigator, but it allows you to see more and do more as you can travel more efficiently.

All roads coming from the right, including diddly ones that look like driveways, have priority unless explicitly taken away from them via signage!
