I've looked at Selftrade but they seem to be introducing a £35 annual charge
Thanks for pointing that out. I rather feel they should have told me themselves. Time to dump them.

    >>> Just want a straight forward online dealing service with live prices and easy to understand fees. Any help please guys? <<<

For what you say iii is great £10.00 for a buy + stamp duty, £10.00 for a sale. There are other features when you get the hang of things which can be useful. Live prices are available at a cost. but when you are in your A/C you can refresh the quote a number of times also when on a discussion page ie forum the live price is @ the top left just refresh the page. Im happy with this so much I am in the process of transfering my share certs to my iii nomanee A/C. Hope this helps :cool2:

I struggled to find a reason not to go with III. No anual fees (not even for an ISA account) and just £10 per share. A very informative site (though you don't need to trade there to take advantage of this. I also think their forums could be much more intuitive.)

I actually haven't bought a share in my life so am a bit green. But I see a lot of people talking about the live prices. If you work 9-5 like me (and I suspect a lot of the investors here do) isn't it easier just to set a limit order?

Thanks for the replies, to be honest, I want a service where by I can trade at any given time, so am ok with the £10-£12 trade price, as I'm talking '000's, not a few quid. This leads on to the question, which brokers are ideal for a newbie looking for online trading? Are Hoodless ok, or Selftrade with their annual charge, or another?

Have a look at The Share Centre which is a very old established company. They have reasonable prices and very good service. Google for Share.com
I have started buying a few shares lately. Not sure it's wise of you to consider spending thousands as a beginner. I'd dip my toe in first and also do some research so as not get a shock if there is some news about the company that you are not aware of. The Utilities are probably a safe bet e.g. British Gas and United utilities but with what is happening in the stock market maybe nothing is safe!. Right now I am interested in the yields.

A very tentative step into a direction I know little about. :hello: But hello anyway!

I was looking at iii and its portfolio builder. I must be missing something as I am reading that its £1.50 per deal (not real-time), with no management fees/inactivity fees etc, and I can either have it as a regular thing or a one-off investment. Can it be a middle thing and I do a small lump investment now, nothing for some months and another lump investment (my lumps would be a starter of a few hundred at a time maximum) because although it states its a regular or one-off thing it also mentions it flexible about stopping and starting when I want for no fees. Is the Transfer Out charge of £10 per stock, if I sell??

I just want something small, neat and tidy. And I want to check that I am not missing anything that should be blazingly obvious!

This is how I interpret it Skylight. The only downside, as far as I can make out, is that you have to pick one of the four days that they offer and the market might not be doing what you want it to on that particular day ;) . Hopefully the pw for my ISA account will arrive in the post tomorrow and I'll be able to speak from experience.

    Bump!

    How did this go?

I'm looking into starting share dealing with a lump sum, then drip feeding probably every couple of months.

iii seem to be mentioned a lot. Would be good to hear how you got on? Or anybody elses opinions if they use iii?

    Cheers
This is WAY more fun than monopoly.

I have been using iii.co.uk for 3 years and have made multiple buys and a few sells and they are fine, you can even set the trade the day before and still only pay £1.50.
