Thanks pompeyrich, just quoting what was in the booklet that came with my tax renewal. Of course they are hardly going to say £80, they would rather put the frighteners up you.
  • Thanks for all the comments. I'm happy to say I wasn't fined £1000 (phew) but had to pay £80 to get it out of the pound. It would have risen to £160 if it was in there longer than 24 hours, but it wasn't. Just had to show them the new tax disc and pay the fee and that was that.

Note to self: pay the next one before the deadline.

    Cheers

My ex (thank god) had his van towed away for non payment of tax. It was taken to a car pound where he had to pay £200 to get it back. They dont put a note through the door incase they get the wrong door. For instance - someone elses car is parked outside my front door right now and I doubt if that person would be happy if I was given a note about it being towed away.

Wait till the DVLA open tomorrow and then they will tell you where it is.

That comes out two weeks before it is due. You still have to remember to get it done in that time.

I did mine online this year for the first time. Well impressed.

It took less than 3 minutes in total!

I did it on Monday night and the disc arrived this morning.

(And I got in before the budget and saved £5 :j)

They don't have to notify you that they have towed away your car if it's on a public highway and not displaying valid tax. So even if you have a valid tax disc and have forgotton to put it on your car they will still tow and charge you.

The police love it when people ring to report their car stolen only to find out it's been towed. Many don't bother collecting the car as it's worth less than the towing fee. Still have to pay the fine though.
