Employer has no liability insurance!

Ive just found out that my employer has no employers liability insurance  just looked and I see it is a legal requirement. Im not sure what to do though, as my colleagues really dont care. I dont think talking to my employer will work, so what (if anything) should I do? Ive googled but all the info seems to be for people wanting to take out insurance.

It is a legal requirement. You can only speak to your employer, why do you think it will not work. He may be unaware of this. You were unaware of it till you looked it up. Give him a chance. He may just realise that if an accident occurred or something like that he would be a. prosecuted because he hasnt got the insurance and probably sued for a fortune by who ever is injured.
Give him a chance, will you

If he's unaware of it, he shoudn't be in business! What other laws might he be 'unaware' of? You should report this to the Health & Safety Executive.

I know talking to him wont work as the current insurance cert displayed is from 2003, and my colleague tells me its one that he made himself.

It is supposed to be displayed openly on the wall too.

I had a boss who shoved it in a drawer. I hung it up on the wall and he ripped it down again and shoved it in the drawer. He didn't mind buying it, but he wouldn't be told where to display it.

Take it off the wall, give it to him and ask him if he is aware that it needs renewing, what kind of company is it?

Thanks, was hoping there would be a nice easy way of dealing with it lol, gonna have to bite the bullet and make a stand. Will bring it up next week and hope for the best, if he says no then Im not sure whether to stay? I have a lot of steps to negotiate with stock, bit worried about injuries.

Depending on the nature of the business, it's not unusual for contractors/customers/etc to ask to see evidence of such cover. As previously mentioned, the current Certificate of EL Insurance must be displayed in a position where all staff can see it but also Certs must be retained for no less than 40 years. How long has the business been going? Even small companies with maybe 5-10 staff in my experience are likely to expect the odd slip/cut finger claim. It's unusual for companies of any size to get away without having this cover. Having said all this, I've been in commercial insurance for 15 years and now finding myself out of work, I've been labouring for a mate who I know doesn't have EL cover but I need the work!

I wouldn't work for a company that doesn't cover me in the event of me having an accident, so you'll be better off looking for a job elsewhere.

And seriously, do consider reporting to him as people like this shouldn't be allowed to run a business.

If he considers running a business with no insurance, he won't think twice of getting rid of you once you point this out.

I'd start looking for some other work soon

He must be as dim as anything, if anything happened to any of you, then he would be liable and with no insurance to back it up......it doesn't bear thinking about.

I'd not bring it up myself, as it draws attention to you - I'd be on the phone to the HSE to find out what steps to take.
