Options
Evening all! Am having a dilema. Have found a buyer for my beloved vintage leather and chrome sofa n chair and they're giving me 500 smacks for it, (paid £60 about 5 years ago for it-result!) I have found one I like http://onestopsofashop.co.uk/epages/eshop282005.sf/en_GB/?ChangeObjectID=2774196&ChangeAction=AddToBasket&LastViewObjectID=2774196&ViewAction=View
Its in Argos also, so I rang and asked how big should my door be to get it in the house, the lad I spoke to reckoned I need a door 224cm wide . I don't know anyone with a door that wide! My house is a old terrace with an old wood standard door, will the delivery dudes get it in my house or am I being barmy? The lad in Argos also said its in 1 piece and not sectional! Cheers for your advice, have never bought a new settee/one that wasn't screwed together in front room and not sure how it works. Thank you!

very very few sofas will not fit, in almost all doors/houses in the UK. otherwise the retailers wouldnt sell so many!
the lad is talking complete cobblers.

in section view a sofa is like an open V. as you insert the upright sofa into the door frame, you twist it round.
    Get some gorm.

the odd one had to go in through a (removed) window!

Only reason my mum used to have issues with getting sofas in her old house was the fact that she had a porch with a door from the porch opening at the narrow end of the rectangle porch if you get what I mean - meant that sofas had to make a very very tight L shaped turn which was what caused the problems. Even then - with a bit of gratuitious jiggling they went in and out eventually!

  • Yeah, I get you, I do have steps up to kitchen door then the entry is kind of directly to left, with the dining room exterior wall dead ahead.am hoping they'll be able to get it through back door in garden as that leads pretty much straight into living room. Jiggling galore - oo, er!!

When we lived in a victorian terraced house, the delivery guys had to remove our sash window to get the sofa in and when we moved out, the removal men took the sash window out again.Luckily the windows were the old wooden type so it was fairly easy.

I have at least two friends who ordered sofas that would not fit and had to go back.

I think to some extent it depends on the skill of the delivery men. When we got new sofas earlier this year, my husband and brother-in-law had terrible trouble getting our old sofas out that the removal men had got in no trouble. The second one (with curly arms) just would not go round the corner into the hall so they smashed it up in the living room (!)

Luckily, our new ones went in no trouble and the delivery guys (Furniture Village) helped us get the second sofa out. I was so pleased with the service that I called FV the following day to say how pleased I was.

Doesn't everybody have a seven foot wide door way, manned by butler 24x7?

You've got to be careful that the retailer will take it back if it doesn't fit. It's the responsibility of the person buying the sofa to make sure that it can be delivered. If you can't get it through the door or window, then it would be a good will gesture on the part of the retailer to take it back......
