Agree with the above, as stated in post #2, try BG as you have nothing to lose.0

From www.consumerfocus.org,uk:
Regulations concerning the disconnection of inactive gas supplies after twelve months are contained in the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1994.
The obligation is covered under Section 16, paragraph 3. It basically states that where a primary meter has been removed, the person who last supplied gas through the meter before removal shall:
a) where the meter has not been reinstalled or replaced, close the service valve and clearly mark any live pipe in the property and
b) where the meter is not reinstalled or replaced before another 12 months goes by, ensure that the service pipe is disconnected as near as practicably possible to the mains and any pipe which is not removed is sealed at both ends appropriately.
If the existing pipework to the property is made of metal then this falls under the HSE Enforcement Policy for the replacement of iron gas mains so it will have to be replaced and the gas transporter will normally pass the cost of this onto whoever requests the work to be carried out.

Depending on the size of the metal pipe (and assuming it hasn't collapsed/blocked), it may be possible for them to simply line the pipe with a plastic liner.
Worth getting the national grid engineer to survey the site as suggested earlier.
If inserting a liner is possible, then it won't involve digging up the entire driveway - and hopefully will be a lot cheaper than the earlier quoted price."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Thanks .......plain english would have been nice(energy watch adviser)
Thanks premier......that sounds an option.
Just seems all a bit of a con to me.....the pipes are fine for everybody else down my road....why not me.I know things have to be changed sometimes for safety but sometimes i think things go too far.
I was advised today by an independent adviser just to tell my electric supplies that i now wish to have gas by them aswell......and not mention the pipes..
if they want my custom they might just reconnect and fit a meter..0 -
jky
If you tell me which bit of the info from consumer focus you don't understand I'll try and explain it in simpler terms for you.0 -
...and the moral of the story is:
Don't get your gas meter removed.
I'm not sure why you took this course of action??British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
sorry energy advisor didnt mean to act so dumb.......i suppose i basically just want to know if i really do need to pay out all this money for new pipes when i really cant understand whats wrong with the old ones.
Money is tight....im a single parent..If i earned £500 less a year i would be entitled to get help paying for my gas heating to be installed but as it is i need to pay for the lot.
so im now wondering if i can afford it with all this on top.0 -
withabix.........i didnt want to pay a standing charge for gas when i wasnt using it.0

That would have been easily sorted by going onto a tarrif without one - I'm sure they've been around since then.
Taking the gas meter out because you don't want to use gas is a bit like taking all the seats out of a car apart from the driving seat because you don't want any passengers.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0
