Rejection for a card I didn't apply for

Today I received a rejection letter from Sainsbury's Bank for a card I did not apply for. Has this happened to anybody else? They gave me their fraud number to call. But, why would someone steal my details and apply with my address? Doesn't seem like a very smart thing for a crook to do.
