A bit shocked

I went into Tesco's yesterday to sock up on some soya milk and ham for sandwiches.

Alpro unsweetened soya milk (in the UHT milk section) was 75p and has now shot up to 95p!

Tesco value cooked ham was £1.38 and is now £1.68!

Every little helps? Yeah, as long as it lines Tesco's pockets! What's going on?? What are these step price hikes for in this credit crunch? Grr!

Tesco never fail to shock me with their sudden price hikes, they do it all the time and although overall i usually find it cheapest for my weekly shop prices on individual items go up suddenly a lot.

I love Sainsbury myself, the whole shopping experience is much nicer and it isn't as expensive as it used to be,i would pay a few extra pounds anyway for the better experience but MR is a big penny pincher.

I was in tesco yesterday and was really dissapointed at the poor stock levels, poor placing of items i.e things moved from their usual places and put on the end of shelves for no apparant reason and going through self pay was horrible, they used to offer help to pack but don't on self pay at my store anymore,i only had 3 bags but it was enough to hold things up and i would have appreciated some help but the staff member was too busy to even get his attention and ask.

It's not just a Tesco thing, the cat litter I get from Asda has gone up from £1.98 to £2.79 in less than a year. Even Aldi are putting prices up by 5-10p now everyone thinks they're cheap.

Tesco have been very expensive for a long time, IMHO, and the quality has deteriorated rapidly in the last 18-24 months. Even their Finest steaks are streaky and full of gristle now.

I suppose my problem is I don't have a car - can't afford to run one, and Tesco is the nearest supermarket to me. If I had a car or could afford a taxi when I did the weekly shop I would probably go elsewhere :(
  • Its frustrating as Tesco is handy for us but I try so hard not to go in there as they're always doing stuff like this - they're a nightmare!

I dont use Tesco, I use Asda but I was shocked at some of their price hikes the other day.
Most noticable was the pack of Hash Browns, they used to be £1.19, then dropped to £1.09. A few days ago I looked to buy some with my online shop and theyre at £1.79!! I guess thats the end of buying those!

I buy alpro soya the unsweetened one regularly and noticed asda had raised the price from 76p to £1 last month.
Luckily my niece told me they are still 76p at sainsbury.I last bought 6 cartons on 29th may.
And now they are 95p at sainsbury just a few days later.
Is this coincidence the way these prices are put up so similarly and round about the same time?

I have been using Sainsbury's own brand unsweetened soya milk for ages now,it was 63p this morning. It's in a red carton and doesn't taste any different to Alpro as far as I am concerned.

If you are prepared to shop at the value end, in our experience Sainsburys is actually cheaper than either Tesco or Asda INCLUDING the £3.50 delivery fee they charge (we don't have a Sainsburys nearby). And their basics stuff is, on the whole, of far better quality than the other supermarket's value range IMO.

Thanks, I may have to travel a little further and go in Sainsburys to see how they compare.
