I don't know why people think this, most probably due to the adverts on TV! At my local primary school a teaching job came up and over 200 people applied for it! I think we are training far too many teachers than there are openings for!

Primary teaching is extremely competitive but for some subjects at secondary level there are shortages. So, you need to do your homework before you decide to retrain in another field.

My experience, gained from myself and from my significant other, is avoid agents like the plague. At best they're a bit useless. At worst they seem determined to waste your time and money, advertising old or seemingly non-existant jobs and inviting you to their offices to sign-up without having anything useful to offer you - presumably the recruiters are targeted on how many peple they sign up!

Anyway, I replied to offer advice so, has you husband considered public sector? By this i mean getting on the local county council and district council websites and scouring through the vacancies? Given these organisations revolve around gathering and spending public money, i'b be surprised if the scope for having lots and lots of financial employees wasn't huge.
Also - try schools, specifically secondary schools or those of a similar size. These will need at least one finance officer. Also, the business manager role might suit - there is an awful lot more to the role than finance, but it might be just the ticket.
Needless to say, these sort of thing is pretty secure, even in the current climate, and the pension is good too.

    Good luck!

Has your husband considered working for himself? There's nothing like being your own boss and in control of your own time, life and future.

I was my own boss for 14 years, then circumstances changed drastically (divorce) and I then worked for nearly 20 years in the public sector, reaching top management level. Then got dumped during a reorganisation.

So after 6 months (getting over the trauma and depression) I went back to working for myself, and have never looked back. Running an internet business from home - work when I want, how I want, and making my own decisions. This is the cheapest way to start a business, has very low overheads, and if your husband has basic skills using a computer, he could perhaps consider what he loves to do, and find a niche to work with.

It's not that difficult, but there are right and wrong ways to do it, and I have learned some expensive lessons in the past 8 years. But now, there is support and funding for practical training to teach folks correctly and show them how to and what to do.

Just a thought. With business management and your husband's previous work, he would be able to apply sound business principles and practices as needed for a credible online business.

And he could work from home - all you need is a PC or Laptop and internet connection.

Best regards and good wishes to you and your family - when one door closes, another one opens - you just have to walk through.
  • I'm not sure if this is agains the rules or not on this forum. Apologies in advance if it is! Am making a programme on unemployment a google search brought me your post. Would it be possible to talk to you about what we are doing? It would be in confidence. Thanks Marcus (high-tide.films@ntlworld.com)

Setting up his own business maybe the way to go - I came across a company yesterday whilst I was on a training course (until recently I was on the dole but now I am self employed) who sell franchises of their business - the company is called thebestof and they have business directories which online where local businesses pay an annual fee (this fee varies according to the franchisee and where they are in the country) - I will find their web details and post it here. It may or may not be useful.
