BT have increased my line rental; can they do that while I'm on a 12mth contract?

Hi all,
I've just discovered BT has put up the cost of my line rental in April. I called them and they said that everybody's line rental increased from April 1.
But can they do that while I'm in the middle of a 12 month contract?
What if they decided to put up the line rental to £1,000 per month, and then say "sorry, you have to pay it - you can't break your contract" (I'm not saying they would, I'm saying they could). This doesn't seem fair to me... what do you think?
Thanks in advance

You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

In BT's T&C's it says that if its prices change to your material disadvantage then you would be allowed to leave even if in contract but you have to move within a short time period of being told of the increase, and as its a small increase in the line rental fee they would be arguing that you are not 'disadvantaged' enough to be allowed to leave penalty free, but someone on this board did argue that and was allowed to move to another SP without being charged (he was still in contract) but he complained as soon as the increase was notified and it went upto the BT lawyers before he got the OK to quit0

Thanks, since it's only a quid or two and I've only got three months left on my contract, I think I'll get over it.You're spelling is effecting me so much.
