Access loans..

Has anyone ever applied for one of these?
Basically if you're in financial trouble you can apply to the uni for an access loan (although I don't think you actually pay it back) which they are given a certain ammount of funding from the government for.

I'm thinking of applying for one now, I'm currently paying £80 a month extra to Natwest bank who demanded repayal of my student overdraft (!!!!!!!s!) and then my computer died, and I had to spend about £150 fixing it - needed to be fixed because its got all my dissertation stuff on it and I live too far from uni to go in and use their pc's every day. At the moment I've got £20 in my bank, with £180 of rent to pay, and about £200 of bills! Next student loan isn't untill April 24th... doh!

Any advice/knowledge on access loans would be appreciated, ie do I stand a chance in hell of getting one?

  • How it works basically is that the government give Universities funding for student who cover under different categories, i.e. student who are single parents, students whose family are on a low wage etc.

It’s classed as an Access to learning fund. How it works at my Uni is that you need to fill out a form giving information such as ingoing’s and outgoings, bank accounts and debts. You also need to send.... the paperwork you received when registering at the Uni (enrolment form), the student loan information and your bank statements for the last three months.

Once you have sent it off it will take approx 4 weeks to process and you will get the decision by writing. You will get the whole amount split into three payments over the year to follow your loan.

Have a look at the link for more information

Hope this is helpful! Your Uni might have the form online so have a look in its financial area.

Speak to your uni student support nit (or whatever they call it) - my university allow you to borrow money off them until your next student loan payment comes through (which may hlep a little - although i don't think they would lend you as much as your going to need) - next student loan payment is middle of april so not that long to go - is there anyway you could talk to landloard and ask if you could pay him a little late for this month and maybe pay for two months together when your next loan comes through?
