I'm in exactly the same position and it's all very confusing!

I'm looking for a phone line (no calls needed) plus a good Broadband Service. Can't get Virgin in the area. Also need TV, probably have to have sky for the kids channels and 5 US etc that appear not to be available on FreeSat.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

A BT landline (* connection of which is currently available f.o.c. if you agree to an 18 month contract and to make 10 calls - which can be inclusive calls - per month) will allow you to take your pick of any of the ADSL broadband providers.

Sky TV contracts 'require' you to leave the STB which they give you for nothing connected to a fixed, working phone line for 12 months. However, if you just have one STB, they don't enforce that requirement.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Just managed to do a "deal" with SKY, £32.25 for 12 months with SKY HD, Variety & Kids Pack plus Mid Broad Band and Line Rental with free evening and weekend calls.

Upfront costs are £49 for the HD Box and £25 to connect a phone line.

    Seems pretty good

Forgot to say, I haven't "signed on the dotted line yet....." so time to change if I've missed something!

If this includes telephone line rental and any fee to install the line then
its pretty good, 'list' price would be £10 line rental, £17.50 TV
pack, £10 HD charge, £5 broadband mid (evening/weekend call package
is free ) so would be £42.50/month,
£25 to connect the phone, is this because there is already a line into
    the property ?

I was a little concerned with that too (IIRC, £25 is the charge Sky will allow you to pay instead of connecting a telephone line to the satellite receiver).

They stated that the £25 charge is for connecting the line, whether it be a new line or re-enabling an existing one at the exchange.....

The £10 line rental (including evening and weekend calls) is free for a month

If you mean, why do I need a BT line to get Sky broadband, it's because Sky broadband comes via a standard BT line, like all broadband services (except Virgin Media). It is not supplied via the Sky satellite dish as some people think.

I will be honest with you, I have been with both. Virgin are great and do what they say and when they say, although you do have to keep an eye on your billing so you dont get over charged.

BT im currently in the process of getting our line back on and switched from our other house from virgin, this has been going on since april. The service is not what I would of expected and to be honest I find that the level of service offered is not acceptable, I was due to have a line port on monday, the temp line went off and the other line didnt come over due to a bt error again. If its a simple new line you will get charged the connection fee, unless you have an 18 month contract although its not clear on their site and very missleading how its explained. I would then go with o2 and it would be worth getting an 02 p&g chip or even contract as it cuts the cost so down and quidco have £50 cash back meaning £30 under a year.
