OH has a problem with a hdd***.sys (or something like that) file causing his computer to crash quite a lot though. He's tried to fix it but its still happening.
Any ideas what I could do to help him sort this out ?
I'm going to run virus scan on his pc and see what nasties that shows up (which I know it will) and then defrag it as well.
Cant delete or download anything on it though as its his pride and joy and he's got THAT much stuff on it

Whats a hdd***.sys file - be specific about what the problem is.0
-
hdd***.sys => first 3 letters are hdd, *** are next three letters that I can't remember and .sys is the file extension
Computer crashed and blue screen with all the usual blurb and the file that it mentions is this hdd file
Computer running Vista
Reason I can't d/load anything on to OH computer is that its his pride and joy and he has THAT much stuff on it (games, d/load files, old games, work files etc) that I do not want to be responsible for deleting something he needs
I'm more than happy to pass on hints for him (whether or not he'll act on them I dont know)0 -
Well if you want hints, you are going to find out the exact name of the file and where it is located - what its doing - before anyone can give you any advice.
Also details about which operating system it is.0 -
What he needs to do is to remove hard drive, place in another clean PC and examine the drive surface and contents. I recomend a product called Spinrite from www.grc.com
This way you are not deleting anything from the drive, just looking.0 -
Not the hiberfil.sys by any chance? (I know you said hdd, but you said you weren't sure...)0

found it ... hssdrv.sys ... knew he'd wrote it down somewhere0

Well thats something to do with Hotspot Shield - you could tell him to uninstall hotspot shield, try the laptop without it. Re-install and see if it still causes problem.0
