It's their current account - maybe check their website?

Edit - this is what they are saying at the moment.

When you use a Nationwide Visa debit card or credit card to make a transaction in certain currencies other than sterling, Visa charge a fee for each transaction and Nationwide currently pays that fee on your behalf.
We will start to pass this fee onto you from 6 May 2009 on credit card and from 1 June 2009 on debit card and it will be included in the sterling amount shown on your statement.
The fee is currently 0.84%. From 1 July 2009 this fee will increase to 1%.
The list below provides details of the countries for which Visa charge a fee. To check if you will be charged, please search for the country you are visiting by using the A-Z list. Unless stated otherwise a fee will be charged."

Using an ATM _ Select the country you are visiting from the list below, if it is listed as "no fee charged" you will not be charged. Otherwise you will be charged the fee. Please remember if you use your credit card to withdraw cash you will be charged a cash advance fee.

So you'll need to look up the countries you're thinking of visiting for more details - here's the page. Looks like a lot of Europe is still fee free for ATM's

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I'm fairly sure that Nationwide are stopping doing this - I read something in the financial pages of the paper the other day. I think you may have missed the boat on this one.
In case I've got it wrong though, it was their current account - maybe check their website?

They're passing on a 1% VISA card fee if you use it outside Europe. Still free within Europe, and at any rate significantly better than the 2.75% + £1.50 that Halifax will charge you.
