Paypal protection - not using ebay checkout

I won an auction on ebay last week and paid straight away.

Today I get an email asking where my payment was. it turns out that the seller has a supurious letter in front of their email address somehow (i.e. Fjames.may@topgear.com) so that if I try to use ebay checkout it goes to an unregistered address and sits there.

I've claimed the money back but can I just pay james.may@etc via paypal and still be protected as when I enter their address and click that its a payment for an ebay item it tells me to use ebay checkout instead?

many thanks,
rabbit mad

I think you can do this, say it's for an ebay item and there should be a field to put the item number in your payment. I read that advice in a thread on here several days ago. Why it's telling you to use checkout I'm really not sure.

If you don't tag it as an ebay item then you won't receive full ebay buyer protection, so I wouldn't do it unless it was a pretty low value item and you trust the seller.

The seller should by now have corrected their mistake, so surely they could send you a new invoice with the correct details, no?

Thanks guys, when I try this I put in the correct email address and click that its a ebay item, but I want to pay through paypal rather than ebay checkout.

It then lists all the items I still need to pay for. I click pay next to this item and it sends the payment to the wrong email address instead.

I'm assuming I need to wait for the seller to amend their paypal address on the listing somewhere before paypal will let me pay this?

Don't go through ebay at all - log into your paypal account directly, and insert the sellers email address and the e-bay item there.

I'm doing that but it still uses the wrong paypal email address.

Use the send money option, enter the sellers correct paypal address and put in the ebay item number

I think i'm being thick here but I use the send money option, put in the correct email address and then I get asked if this is for an ebay item or some other purchase or some other service.

I click ebay item and then it says "recommend you use ebay checkout". I ignore that and click pay through paypal or something and I'm taken to a new page that lists what I've won and haven't paid for. I click on the item and the wrong email address is used.

I can't see anywhere to enter the ebay item number?
