Does anyone know what American Express are like when applying, do they score harshly and do they only accept relatively big earners?
what sort of criteria do they like?

very hard - one of the toughest. Some people get them others simply can't but if you have no baddies then worth a go.... one search won't do any harm but do the amex before any others!2010 - year of the troll

The last 12 come into play but realistically if you pass their credit score then the last 6mths will suffice. If you fail credit score and it goes to underwriting then they look at the last 12mth.2010 - year of the troll

I've never been accepted by AMEX, so would have to agree they are one of the hardest by personal experience. I've tried 3 times over the last 5 years and never been successful despite having a clean credit history, few searches and successful on other cards with some high limits given.
The Tesco clubcard is another one that simply will not let me in!Best Regards,

I got accepted when I was 20 but had to provide proof of all incomes and they only wanted to give me a limit of £700. Luckily due to their incompetence (they told me the wrong limit twice over the phone) I got £1400! They've refused to increase it though and I've had the card over a year.Kavanne
