  • Firstly I would suggest you buy something for the mum if you haven't already, when I had my daughter, only one person bought me anything I was so touched. Don't buy clothes he/she will get bought loads, we had loads and they don't get out of sleepsuits for the first few months!! So yeah I would probably suggest something for baby to play with but since they don't really play, a book might be nice, possibly a cloth book with touchy feely bits as this will be more useful earlier, but also later when you can leave them in the cot incase they wake up before you they have something to look at but it won't be uncomfortable if the sleep on it. I was suprised at how much my little one loves books, and from such an early age, from just a few day she would look at the pictures with me.

Another suggestion, well its not really a present would be to print out some black and white patterns for mum to stick by babies cot/changing table, my daughter loved to stare at these and they are supposed to be the best thing for them developmentally. I'll see if I can find a link.
    It's definitely not definately!

Yorkshirepudding is absolutely right about buying something for the mother. She'll get innundated with gifts for the baby, and she's the one who has done all the hard work.

lovely personalised handpainted stuff here https://www.eekisawamouse.co.uk
a birth sampler / memory book/ box etc here https://www.emmas-memories.com
  • If it is the first child, I would recommend a nice outfit. Something for wearing at about 3 - 6 months (which will be summer wear if she is just about to have the baby)

Wait until baby has arrived then go and get something specific for the sex. Go for cute, I wouldn't go trendy for this age, I think it is inappropriate.

You can't go wrong with M&S, if you have a Zara near you they do lovely baby clothes. Baby Gap is also absolutely wonderful.

For mum something you know she will like. Flowers (although she will have loads, and won't appreciate them yet). Chocs, think of how she'll feel about her figure, maybe just a small box). Nice bottle of Clarins bath stuff?

I can fully recommend this site for gorgeous handmade and personalised gifts. Emma is brilliant and will try to incorporate your own ideas for a unique gift. The items are really reasonably priced and very high quality. I've seen similar yet inferior versions selling for twice the price.

I'm not Emma BTW, just a big fan. :D

  • How about some nice essential oils (tea tree and lavender) for your friend to use to help with stitches/healing... couple of drops in the bath morning and night will help tonnes....

Also I always buy a copy of Music for Mother and Baby - Simon Cooper for everyone I know that has a baby... I cannot recommend it enough, my two still listen to it every night (gets them to sleep within 30 mins everytime!) and it sounds just like angels singing.... it's fab! It's extremely relaxing and soothing (they even use it in some hospitals for premature babies) and was an absolute godsend to me :D

I would say a pair of lovely daisy roots leather shoes. You can get them from ebay but they do have their own site. They are beautiful shoes, which are handy for keepimg the socks on and have soft shoes. They come in all sorts of designs. My son is 9 months and I only discvered these at 6 months but I would have loved them earlier...... :T
