LED TV, worth waiting?

I've been looking for a new TV recently and whilst wandering around PC world saw a samsung LED TV... very nice! And very thin, next to the LCDs the picture was visibly better and how thin!

So are they worth the wait? Or just buy an LCD now?

Its not the jump they would have you believe, its just a change is back lighting really.

Yes they are thinner. but an LCD isn't exactly fat is it.

The early models will also charge a 'new tech premium'.

The technology does have its advantages but I the cost at first won't be worth it.

There's always something better coming soon you can't win!

So it depends on what you have now.

    Yes - I agree.

Whatever you buy now will be superseded next year. It's the way the electronics industry keeps taking money off us.

Look at computers - they kept ugrading them with new innovations and charged £1,000 or more for the latest technology. When everyone had bought that, they released something else at £1,000 and dropped the earlier stuff to £500.

Now that the customers have computers that do everything they expect of them so that they can't justify a £1,000 tag for an upgrade, they're all at £300-£600 each, other than those geared to a speciality market.

Same with televisions - flat screen sets without 1080P on them are down to a £300, 1080Ps are £500-600 - last year £1,000 - All singing-all dancing 400 and 600 hz sets now at £1200 to £1400 - these will be down in 18 months to £500 because the next gimmick will come along (3-D presumably - that's got to be worth £1,500 a throw to the industry).

Just buy what you want now and accept that you can never keep up with the market - they will always be one step ahead.

Thanks guys I'm no way trying to keep up with the industry I've been building cheap computers for long enough to know that I'm not rich enough. TBH the only two things was the visibly better picture quality and the fact it was about 3cm thick, thats something I would consider wall mounting.

Just wondering what you guys think of them.

I agree with everything you say, but will we really need to buy new tv sets for 3d?

It is already possible to get 3D on satellite just now (3D Switch on Eurobird) and all I need to watch that is a pair of plastic glasses.

I don't think we will need to buy new sets

To get the 3D that Sky are to transmit then you will need a new set as the processing is done in the tv itself. I've seen a demo of the technology. It's very impressive!

No, there is technology in the pipeline that allows 3D using lenses in the screen. Only works if you sit in exactly the right place though.

I've seen that demoed too. It uses a lenticular screen over a regular plasma - although the verticle resolution is halved as the signal is split beteen the two lenticular directions. It can be viewed from 9 specific spots and of course without any glasses!

In layman terms, an external processor splits the incoming signal. Every other vertical line to the screen has the slightly different view. The technology can also analyse a 2D source to produce a 3D image. By using processing that analyses sideways movement and speed of movement to determine which plane to put the particular image on. In other words it's bleedin' clever!
